James 3: The start of a new drawing. Probably won't have much time for a while to work on this. But I would like to have it done fairly quickly. American Artist is having a self portrait competition due May First 2008. I haven't done a self portrait in such a long time... a finished piece. Hmmmm could be fun. My father (James) is always fun to render. Such a familiar subject. Just seeing him two weekends ago made me get out the pastel paper and work on a new piece. Makes me miss him a little less.

Wow, totally incredible start. It's fabulous as a finished piece, in fact!

Thanks Lacey. I will plug away on this and see where it takes me. I want to get past the Finalist phase of Artist Magazine. I want in there. Actually, I want in there, and in Society of Illustrators, and Spectrum before it's all over. Could be chasing a fools treasure, but that never stopped me before.

I know how you feel... it's been a long time since I entered anything, and I don't think I've even touched Artist's Mag. Nor have I ever attempted the ARC Salon.

I think that'll be a goal for the year... enter stuff. ;-)

This is looking really fantastic Doug. There is soul and spirit in this drawing, great work.

Bryan, thanks man, Dad is a natural for me as a model. There is a connection like you said, spirituality that I see... that I hope to capture.

You've captured his "almost" but not quite smile. Nicely done. Always amazing.

Thanks Barb, that means a lot.

This is fantastic! I really like your family portraits. I also liked the one of you that was in your blogg at an earlier time (but I couldn't figure out how to comment). You are getting better and better at this. You make us proud.
